Moving pads are the first and cheapest line of defense against damage. Pads can be rented as cheaply as $10/dozen from U-Haul, Penske, Budget and others. Most professional moving companies will use four dozen blankets or more on a 26' truck. Quilted pads are more expensive, but can be washed, while normal furniture pads come apart in a washing machine. Quilting pads normally cost $14.95 and more from U-Haul and other companies. We discount what we sell and sell quilted pads for $11.95.

Four-wheel furniture dollies are appropriate for upright pianos. However, to move baby grand and grand pianos, you will need a piano board. These type of pianos have their legs taken off and are leaned over on their side onto a piano board, where they are blanket-wrapped and strapped to prevent movement during transport from one place to another. Higher-end piano boards are made out of oak instead of fir and are also reinforced to prevent cracking during transport of a 1000-pound grand piano. For top-of-the-line piano board expect to pay over $150.

Furniture dollies, also called 4-wheel dollies, are ideal for transport over level surfaces (no stairs) of couches, pianos on piano boards, upright pianos, and so on. 4-wheelers can be made of plastic or 1/2" wood from U-Haul on the low end to professional 4-wheelers made of 3/4" oak and topped with gorilla grip. 4-wheel dollies can go for $20 on the low end to over $100 for professional grade.

Hand trucks can be electric-powered stair climbers for moving gun safes and hot tubs up and down stairs to appliance dollies for refrigerators and other taller pieces of furniture, whose straps prevent stair toppling. They can be heavy and made out of steel or much lighter but still strong, made out of magnesium, read expensive. Because of their bulk and weight, you would never use an electric stair climber or appliance dolly for your day-to-day box moving. The lighter utility dollies are normally preferred for moving boxes on level ground or up stairs. The type of tire selected can make a utility dolly a dream or a nightmare. Dollies can go from $50 to $2000 and more.

Straps are at the heart of the successful move. A common 16' strap can often be had around $25 both for use with a buckle or with an E-track connection. Twine and rope is the poor man's strap and is often the first selection by a customer moving a single piece of furniture. Over long distances, however, string should be avoided, as it stretches and loosens the load, permitting furniture damage.

On our YouTube video, "How to Move a Piano," we currently have 292,000 views. The single-most asked question is how we move an upright piano up and down stairs. The answer is either two or more burly men or a stair ramp. With a stair ramp and a 4-wheel professional dolly, baby grand and grand pianos weighing in excess of 1000 pounds can be readily moved. A ten-foot-long reinforced stair ramp can often run over $500.

Boxes can be had in any shape, form and strength from a pallet box with a dimension of 40" x 48" x 36"-high to a tripple-wall Gaylord box, to styrofoam-lined boxes or tubes of almost any length and usually 2, 3 or 4 inches in diameter. To get a manufactured box to your specified dimension can often save a significant amount of money per box, but the quantity ordered is usually a minimum of 500 or 1000.
